Being top shape is just as important for officials as it is for the players. Most people who have attended a sporting event can attest to the difficulty an official has when they are not in good shape. Knowing how to stay in shape is important for many different reasons. First, it allows for the official to concentrate on the task at hand, which is officiating the game, not focusing on how tired they are. Second, because if a referee is not in shape it will be hard for them to keep up with the players and see the whole game as it is happening. This could lead to missed calls or inaccurate calls. The third reason is simply because it is important for atmosphere for everyone including the officials to recognize the importance of staying fit and health and how that correlates to sports. Here are a few exercises to stay in shape.
Three Fitness Exercises for Officials
1. Jogging- Long distance running is great for the body because it stretches the muscles out, but it is important in sports when an official must have the endurance for long periods of time. Jogging lost distances every day with help the body to be more acclimated to running for the duration of a sporting event.
2. Sprinting- Sprinting short distances is an effective way to build leg muscle, but also the best way to train the body for the short bursts of speed that are required for an official to move up and down the field with the players.
3. Yoga- Yoga is the most effective way to keep the body limber and flexible. Flexibility will allow an official to maintain top shape while saving the body from the risk of injury.
